Check the deal
before the trip.
A low sticker price is only one part of a useful clearance find. Use this checklist before making a special trip or buying something you had not planned to buy.
Six things to check
- Would I buy it anyway? Write down the use you have for it and the price you would otherwise pay. A large discount on an unwanted item can still increase your spending.
- Is it the exact item? Match the model, size, quantity and condition. A similar product may have a different price.
- What is confirmed locally? Note when you checked the store and price. Treat an online alert as a lead to investigate, not a reservation or a promise that the shelf still has stock.
- What extra trip does it require? Include extra transport or parking costs and decide how much time you are willing to spend.
- Can I use or return it? Check missing parts, storage space, expiry where relevant, and the retailer's actual return conditions before buying.
- What did I really save? Record the receipt price against your realistic alternative. Count the membership cost too if you use a paid alert service.
